It's hard to believe that Dorchester Prison cost just £18,000 to build when it was completed in 1795. It believed that a major contribution to the reported paranormal activity is contributed by not only the hash and terrible conditions the prisoners were subject to, but to the fact the prison was built on the site of the old medieval castle dating back to 1154. Prior to this, the previous Gaol was situated in High East Street where if convicted, you would have been segregated by the type of crime you committed, and the person's sex.
Public executions were for centuries as common as going to the cinema nowadays and Dorchester witnessed its fair share over the years. one of the most popular forms of entertainment in England, and Dorchester, as an assize town, certainly witnessed its fair share. Outside the gates of Dorchester Prison in 1856 and in front of over 3,000 people, Elizabeth Martha Brown, a mother for two and aged just 45 was the last woman in the united kingdom to be publicly hung.
The history books show that the last male to be hung in Dorset outside the gates of the prison was convicted murderer James Seale. James saw his fail sealed at the gallows on August 10th 1858, and this final hanging was the last of its kind as the Victorian age could no longer tolerate public executions as entertainment.
Today the spooky and foreboding jail sits empty but not all is as it seems when the lights go out. Doors slamming shut with no one near them, objects being thrown and even voices cry out in the night. Could this be due to the torment previous occupant would have experienced during their stay and before their execution?
